How a child feels about their first few dental visits tends to follow them into adulthood. So we go slowly. Early visits are often nothing more than a ride in the chair, a count of the teeth and a sticker. We explain everything to them, in their own words, before we do it. There is a play area, and no one rushes.

Step by step
The first visit is about the room, not the teeth. Sitting in the chair, meeting the dentist, seeing the mirror. Often nothing else happens at all.
We count and check the teeth, showing them each instrument first. Nothing goes near a child's mouth before they have seen it and understood it.
Fluoride varnish and fissure sealants where they help, plus brushing shown to them rather than lectured at you.
Regular short visits keep it ordinary. A child who visits when nothing is wrong is far less frightened on the day something is.

A closer look
Nothing goes near a child's mouth before they have seen it, held it if they want to, and understood what it does. That is what makes the next visit easy.

Around their first birthday, or whenever the first teeth appear. Early visits are mostly about familiarity, and they make everything afterwards easier.
Tell us when you book and we will plan around it. That usually means a longer, slower appointment where we do less than we could, so that next time we can do more.
Yes. They hold the space for the adult teeth behind them, and decay in a baby tooth hurts a child just as much. Losing them early can crowd what follows.
Of course. For younger children we would rather you did. There is also a lounge if an older child would prefer to do it alone.
Keep it light and avoid words like hurt, needle or drill, even to promise there will not be any. Say they are going to have their teeth counted, and leave the rest to us.
